How To Make Italian Seasoning

You can buy Italian herb seasoning in stores and supermarkets but I prefer to make mine by mixing all the dried herbs. Adjust your salt because if tasted as is, it will taste bland as I prefer to keep salt on the lower side and later adjust that in my recipe rather than allowing the salt in a seasoning overpowering the whole recipe. Store it in an airtight container and you are good to go for at least 3 months, if you can resist not using it....

No Knead Buttermilk Pull Apart Rolls Alexandra S Kitchen

Know this: any bread recipe you love can be mixed a day ahead of time and stashed in the fridge to rise. Or, if you like making rolls, you can make your recipe up to the point where you shape the rolls and stick them in the baking pan, at which point you can stick the pan in the fridge. As I said, you can do this with any bread recipe you love, but if you don’t have one in mind, I have a thought: buttermilk pull-apart rolls....

Roasted Asparagus With Balsamic Parmesan Alexandra S Kitchen

Having followed the Canal House ladies for years now, I’ve come to associate asparagus with them — and them with asparagus. When I see fat spears at the market, I think of their insistence on peeling the bottoms, an effort I’ve yet to make, to ensure they cook evenly. I also think of their shaved asparagus salad, one I love, one that introduced me to using the vegetable in its raw form....

Stewy Chickpeas With Tomatoes And Feta Alexandra S Kitchen

A few weeks ago, while flipping through the beautiful I Love New York, I came across an enticing photo of a warm panzanella, which sent me right into the kitchen to make it or sort-of it immediately: in place of the bread, I swapped in chickpeas, which I had just cooked, and which worked beautifully, the result being a stewy mix of chickpeas, tomatoes, basil, and feta. We devoured most if it immediately with crusty, olive oil-toasted bread, then snacked on the leftovers for days....

The Best Spinach Artichoke Dip Alexandra S Kitchen

But in anticipation of our cozy game day together this year, I thought it might be fun to make some Super Bowl classics, like foods preceded by the word “buffalo” and dips presented in bread bowls. My children thrilled at the latter. (They passed on the buffalo cauliflower). This past month, I’ve tried a number of recipes for spinach-artichoke dip, most of which have been delicious, all of which have called for heaps of mayonnaise, sour cream, cream cheese, mozzarella, and parmesan....

Two Lentil Dal

Wise words. This is how two-lentil dal materialized in my kitchen. One night I scrounged two cups of assorted lentils from several near-empty, many-months-old bags, threw them in a pot and crossed my fingers. But the result, a happy mix of creamy and chunky, like a partially puréed soup, was very welcomed at the table, even more so than subsequent purebred dal attempts. Now, I realize, the texture I am describing may push this dish out of the category of dal altogether, but it’s delicious nonetheless and couldn’t be simpler to throw together: sweat an onion, add spices (cumin, coriander fennel, turmeric and crushed red pepper flakes) and lentils, cover with water, simmer until done....

Vegetarian Broccoli Cheddar Soup Alexandra S Kitchen

So when I saw this recipe on Bon Appetit, I was intrigued. For one, it calls for water, as opposed to stock or milk. How nice? Two, it’s thickened by both puréed broccoli stalks and potato, as opposed to a roux. Love it. Three, it’s finished with a small amount of Greek yogurt. Interesting, right? As I made it, I discovered another plus: It’s a one-pot, prep-as-you-go job: while you sweat the onions and garlic, you chop the broccoli and potato; as you simmer the broccoli and potato; you grate the cheese....
